Down Under Got Solar Not Molar

Down Under Got Solar Not Molar

In what famous travel writer Bill Bryson coined a sunburned country, sadly the fanfare for dental care is not as ebullient as the copious amount of solar energy surging down upon the Aussies. Even with a socialized type of dental insurance thrust upon them by the Commonwealth that encompasses sister countries such as Canada, Britain, and New Zealand, unfortunately fewer than half ever use it. This is because most procedures of importance are only partially covered, such as cosmetic dentistry. Yes, it’s nothing but down and dirty dentistry down under, fair dinkum.

In the land of ingenuity, however, Australians have found a way around the system by which they are bound. Even though they live in a country which doubles as a continent and possibly a planet all its own, they have discovered that the most exotic thing their Southeast Asian neighbors offer is affordable dental care. This, above all other things, has prompted people to venture forth from the Land of Oz to places such as the Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, and Indonesia. These are places, quite honestly, that the average outbacker would poke fun of ordinarily. This bravado is merely a façade, however, as most Australians are simply trying to hide their fear of spicy food. If you want to watch a grown man from Perth cry, give him a nacho chip with a drop of Tabasco sauce on it.

Britons Travel for Cosmetic Dental Care

Cost and Quality push Britons to travel for dental care

With fewer NHS dentists, longer waiting times and rising costs of private treatment, more and more Britons are opting to travel abroad for dental treatment, with Hungary being the top destination.

The cost of private dental treatment in the UK is steadily on the rise and has already risen beyond the means of many patients. To give an example, the cost of a dental implant can cost anywhere between £1,800 - £3,000 whereas in Hungary they are almost half the price at £580. In Budapest root canal treatment and a crown fitting can be done for £250 whereas that same procedure would set you back around £800 in the UK. It is evident that even with the cost of flights and accommodation the savings are substantial, considering you can also enjoy a bit of a holiday at the same time.

Push/Pull and Cost Factors

With fewer NHS dentists, longer waiting times and rising costs of private treatment, more and more Britons are opting to travel abroad for dental treatment, with Hungary as the top destination.

The cost of private dental treatment in the UK is steadily on the rise and has already risen beyond the means of many patients. For example, the cost of a dental implant can cost anywhere from £1,800 - £3,000 whereas in Hungary they are almost half the price at £580. It is evident that even with the cost of flights and accommodation the savings are substantial, considering you can also enjoy a holiday at the same time.

Although the NHS does provide dental services there are very few NHS dentists, due to the current contract in which dentists are paid according to the Band level of treatment provided rather than per item of service provided which means they get paid a fixed amount regardless of the amount of treatment required. In the UK there are approximately four dentists for every 10,000 people in England, this, as you can imagine, creates long waiting lists for treatment, forcing people to choose private services which are often well beyond their means. Furthermore the NHS does not cover cosmetic treatment, so for those in need of cosmetic dental treatment, private dental services are the only option. It is not unheard of for people to receive quotes for upwards of £11,000 for cosmetic dental treatment, whereas the same procedure can be in Hungary or Poland for almost half the price.

Pattaya is a popular beach resort on the Gulf of Thailand just 150 km. southeast of Bangkok - a mere two-hour drive. Pattaya’s pulsating nightlife is well known, but local authorities have, in recent years, improved the quality of the beaches and reinvented the resort as a more family-friendly destination. Today, hundreds of thousands of visitors are drawn each year to Pattaya to windsurf, water ski, swim, sunbathe, snorkel, sail, or take trips to nearby islands. Other activities include Bungee jumping, cycling, skydiving, go-Karting, Muay Thai (Thai boxing), and Paintball. Golfers, both novice and expert, are well catered to as well, with a wide selection of golf courses around Pattaya.

Another major draw for visitors to Pattaya is the wide selection of restaurants serving some of Thailand's freshest seafood. Due to the high number of expatriate foreigners in Pattaya there is also an excellent selection of authentic foreign eateries serving French, Italian, Swiss, German, Hungarian, Scandinavian, English, Indian, Arabic, Japanese, and Chinese cuisine.

Tbilisi: One of the Most Charming Cities

Georgia's Centennial Olympic Park

It is no surprise that Georgia, a former state within the former USSR, is becoming a player in the dental tourism industry. Given a well-trained professional class, early adopters for technology, and an enthusiasm that is evident in many emerging countries, one can expect to see Tbilisi and Georgia continue to ride the wave for years to come.

Georgia sits on the southeastern edge of the Black Sea, a border that abuts Russia, with Turkey to Georgia's southwest, Armenia due south, and Azerbaijan to the southeast.

Travelers flying into Georgia for dental treatment usually get their work done in the capital city of Tbilisi, known as one of the most charming cities in Eurasia. In fact, its charm, sophistication and relaxed culture have resulted in it being referred to as “the Paris of Eurasia.”

And the clinics are full-service as in other parts of Europe offering deep cleaning, extractions, Panoramic 360 x-rays, implants and dentures, or just about anything dental one can think of.  The unit of account or invoices is in Euros. However, the cost is affordable as operating expenses are structurally less than in the high tax jurisdictions on western Europe so one can expect to pay a fraction of the cost of a high cost country.
